Choosing between Azure's container and app-hosting services comes down to how much control you need versus how much operational burden you're willing to carry. Four services cover most scenarios, ranging from fully managed PaaS to full Kubernetes. The trick is matching the abstraction level to the workload rather than reaching for the most powerful option by default.

Azure App Service

What it is A platform-as-a-service for hosting web apps, REST APIs, and backends. You push code (.NET, Node, Python, Java, PHP) or a single container image and Azure manages the OS, patching, and underlying compute entirely.

Where it shines Built-in features do the heavy lifting: managed TLS certificates, custom domains, authentication via Easy Auth, deployment slots for staging and swap, and autoscale rules out of the box. It's the fastest path from code to a running, production-grade URL.

Watch out for It's opinionated about the single-app model. Multi-container microservice topologies, sidecars, and fine-grained networking get awkward. Cold starts on lower tiers and cost creep on higher Premium plans are the usual friction points.

Best fit A team shipping a web app or API that wants minimal ops and doesn't want to think about containers or orchestration at all.

Azure Container Apps

What it is A serverless container platform built on Kubernetes and KEDA, with the cluster fully abstracted away. You bring container images; Azure handles scheduling, scaling, and ingress without exposing any Kubernetes surface.

Where it shines Scale-to-zero and event-driven autoscaling (HTTP traffic, queue depth, or any KEDA scaler) make it efficient for bursty and microservice workloads. Native Dapr integration simplifies service-to-service calls, pub/sub, and state, while revisions give you blue-green and canary deploys for free.

Watch out for You trade Kubernetes control for simplicity — no direct access to nodes, custom operators, or arbitrary cluster-level configuration. If you eventually need that control, migration means stepping up to AKS.

Best fit Microservices and event-driven systems that want container flexibility and modern deploy patterns without owning a Kubernetes cluster.

Azure Container Instances (ACI)

What it is A low-level primitive that runs a single container or a container group on demand, billed per second, with near-instant startup. There's no built-in orchestration, load balancing, or autoscaling.

Where it shines Fast, ephemeral compute: batch jobs, scheduled tasks, CI/CD runners, and one-off processing. It also serves as elastic burst capacity behind AKS via the Virtual Kubelet, absorbing spikes without adding permanent nodes.

Watch out for It's a building block, not a full service. Running long-lived production apps on ACI alone means reinventing routing, scaling, and health management yourself — which is exactly what the higher-level services already solve.

Best fit Short-lived, self-contained container tasks, or burst compute that complements another orchestrator.

Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS)

What it is Fully managed Kubernetes. Azure runs the control plane for free; you own the node pools, networking model, upgrades, scaling policies, and all the YAML that goes with them.

Where it shines Maximum control and the entire Kubernetes ecosystem — Helm, operators, service meshes (Istio, Linkerd), GitOps, custom controllers, and advanced networking. It's the right foundation for complex, multi-region, or highly customized platforms and for teams already fluent in Kubernetes.

Watch out for The operational burden is real: node patching, version upgrades, capacity planning, security hardening, and cluster observability all become your responsibility. It's easy to over-adopt AKS for workloads the simpler services would handle with a fraction of the effort.

Best fit Teams that genuinely need Kubernetes — for ecosystem, control, or scale — and have the capacity to operate it well.

Decision Guide

Deploy a web app or API with minimal ops Reach for App Service; it gets you to production fastest with the least to manage.

Microservices or event-driven work without Kubernetes ops Reach for Container Apps; you get scaling and modern deploys without cluster overhead.

One-off container, job, or burst compute Reach for ACI; pay per second for exactly the work you run.

Full control and the Kubernetes ecosystem Reach for AKS; accept the ops cost in exchange for total flexibility.

Rule of Thumb

Start at App Service or Container Apps for most workloads — they cover the large majority of real-world apps and APIs. Drop to ACI when you need a job or burst runner rather than a standing service. Move to AKS only when a concrete requirement — ecosystem, control, or scale — justifies the operational weight it brings. Choosing the lightest service that meets the need is almost always the cheaper and more maintainable call.
